 These
antique pine columns contain some of the best heart pine found
in these old buildings. These columns provided the support for
floors and were positioned on an iron rod that came up from the
floor below to keep the columns from sliding. They have a hole
drilled completely through the length of the column - quite an
engineering feat for that time! We think this was done to prevent
the column from splitting, and if so, it worked, as these columns
are very solid!
The
top of the columns were fitted with a cap, which fit over the
top of the column and was bolted to the structural support beams
for the next floor up. We have these cast iron caps available
as well.
These
beams shine up very nicely!
