KMAC to Start Deconstruction on Large Textile Mill in Alabama

KMAC Services, Birmingham, AL, announces that they will begin deconstruction of Mount Vernon Mills in Tallassee, AL. Tim McCollum of KMAC estimates deconstruction of this historic facility to begin by the end of May, 2006.

The Mount Vernon Mills structure is a large complex on the banks of the Tallapoosa River in Tallassee, AL.

This mill is said to be the country's oldest continuously running textile mill, having been chartered in 1841 and the first building built in 1844. It has a broad history - in its original building they cleaned, spun, wove, bleached and dyed cotton. A second building was built in 1852 and during the Civil War, this new facility manufactured Confederate uniform and tent material while the original building was used as an armory for Confederate troops. A more modern facility was built in 1900, and this facility operated continuosly until it closed recently. In 1943 the Tallassee division of Mount Vernon Mills was awarded the Army-Navy "E" award.

The buildings on this property were built in a similar fashion to Springs Mill that was recently deconstructed by KMAC, including the 10" columns and large timbers and flooring beams. The exception is that these buildings have walls of granite blocks rather than brick. KMAC has experience with this type of deconstruction and will take extra care in bringing these beams and timbers down and preserving this heritage wood. "The wood contained in these timbers promises to be excellent quality and has a rich history," Bob Klinner of KMAC Services said recently. "With our experience with this type of material, we will know how to bring this building down with minimal damage to the wood, making as much as possible available for flooring and beam projects."
